China’s Sexual Revolution

 A scene like this in China would have been unthinkable a decade ago. No more.

Meet Bao Huai, a Chinese youth set out to demystify sex in China.

“People no longer use sex as a yardstick of personal ethics. We have humanized sex, ” says Bao.

He is writing a book titled “In and Out” on the explosion of sex in traditionally modest and prudish China.

“When you walk on the street, you see billboards advertising Calvin Klein underwear. When you watch a DVD movie, the first scene may be lovemaking. People are stimulated by these images and start to think more about sex,” Bao says.

A sexual revolution is now afoot in China, where men and women no longer hesitate to touch each other in public.

Talking about sex is also more common and shops in Beijing now offer an array of marital aids and specialty condoms.

Pan Suiming, a sexologist at People’s University conducted a nationwide survey on Chinese sexual behavior.

His most notable finding: half of the urban males in their thirties say they have had more than one sexual partner.

“It’s not a shocking revelation compared to the West, but compared to China’s own history, compared to the time when I was young, it’s something amazing. If half of Chinese urban men in their thirties are unfaithful, what about their wives?” Pan says.

During the Cultural Revolution forty years ago, love and sex were denounced as bourgeois decadence.

Pan explains “After the Cultural Revolution,as soon as politics changes, sex rebounded. That’s why we say the Cultural Revolution is the father of the current sexual revolution.”

If politics is the father — what’s the mother of sexual revolution?

“That’s the one-child policy adopted in 1980, which shattered the Confucian belief that reproduction is the only purpose of sex, ” says Pan.

But he warns that as Chinese men and women seek sexual fulfillment comes some unintended consequences: Teen pregnancy, extra-marital relations and divorce; already on the rise as China breaks the boundaries of sexual satisfaction.

Groot deel Telenet-hotspots tot 15 april gratis

Het netwerk van gratis hotspots in België zal tijdelijk - tot midden april - in omvang verdubbelen. Telenet test in deze periode een samenwerkingsovereenkomst waarbij het zijn eigen plaatsen met draadloos internet toevoegt aan het aanbod van Free-hotspot.com. Deze organisatie biedt over heel Europa plaatsen met gratis draadloos internet aan. Enige voorwaarde is dat surfers eerst een advertentie moeten bekijken.

“We zijn erg enthousiast dat Telenet ons heeft gekozen om gratis toegang toe te voegen aan hun hotspots”, zegt Joe Brunoli, vicepresident marktontwikkeling van Free-hotspot.com. “Telenet benadrukt met het kiezen van dit nieuwe programma zijn toewijding aan innovatie en zijn wens om HotSpots nog toegankelijker te maken.” Het blijft voorlopig wel koffiedik kijken of het project wordt verdergezet na 15 april.

Door 176 Telenet-locaties aan de 167 draadloze plekken van Free-hotspot.com toe te voegen, groeit het netwerk van gratis internetplaatsen in België spectaculair. Toch omvat dit niet alle hotspots van Telenet. De provider maakt voor dit testproject een selectie. Niet alle stations uitgerust met deze dienst garanderen dus een kosteloze toegang.

"Dit is passie, maar wel berekend

Cherry Moon-chef Rudy Pincé (59) vond zin in heropening en vrouw in Argentinië

Over precies een week gooit de Cherry Moon de deuren weer open. Dat zal gebeuren nadat Rudy Pincé zijn legendarische club twee jaar geleden begroef, en nadat een burn-out hem in Buenos Aires bracht. Maar zie: hij vond er zijn 32 jaar jongere vrouw én de goesting in een nieuw avontuur. ‘Ik zal wellicht doodvallen in een discotheek.’

Waaslander Pincé (60 in april) woont sinds oktober weer in België, in het majestueuze Brugse huis waar Celie Dehaene opgroeide. Zijn plannen om na zestien jaar Cherry Moon een eetcafé te openen liet hij achter in Argentinië, maar Lorena Isola (27) bracht Pincé wel mee. De brunette met wie Pincé trouwde in Knokke, tekent voor de inrichting van de nieuwe Cherry Moon, die ze in één adem met Pincé als clubby en underground omschrijft. Lounge in Lokeren straks?

Pincé: ‘Ik had het in 2005 wel gezien met de Cherry Moon. Ik zat vast in het vakje van house en techno, en was ook gewoon moegewerkt. Ik had een burn-out, trok naar een vriend in Buenos Aires en was van plan om niet meer terug te keren naar België. (glimlacht)

Via die vriend raakte ik echter aan de praat met Lorena, die net als ik ook nog basgitaar gespeeld had. Zo hadden we meteen een gespreksonderwerp. We deelden onze passie voor muziek, werden gaandeweg een koppel, en stilaan kriebelde het toch weer om iets met onze knowhow te doen.’

Om eerlijk te zijn: ik vind het huidige dancingaanbod nogal magertjes. Dat niveau wil ik dus graag helpen opkrikken. De inrichting van de nieuwe club wordt bijvoorbeeld heel speciaal: doeken, sterren, gordijnen… Een hele omwenteling in vergelijking met de industriële look die Cherry Moon voordien had. Toen kon er makkelijk tweeduizend man binnen, nu ben ik tevreden met achthonderd bezoekers.’

Als jij tekent voor de decoratie, Lorena, dan neem ik aan dat je daarvoor opgeleid bent, niet?
‘Ja hoor. Via een vriend die in New York woont, heb ik bovendien nog meer geleerd over decoratie en inrichting. Of ik van plan ben om voor altijd in België te blijven? Dat weet ik eigenlijk niet. Er kan vanalles gebeuren, en ik ben nog maar een jaar samen met Rudy.’

Pincé: ‘En ik voel me nog altijd jong genoeg om nóg eens de wereld rond te reizen. Lorena heeft overigens ook een talenknobbel. Alleen doet iedereen hier in België zijn best om Engels tegen haar te spreken. Zodat ze nu nog geen perfect Nederlands spreekt. (lacht) Weet je: het enige in verband met mijn leeftijd waarmee ik een probleem heb, is dat cijfer. Ik ken ook oude mensen van achttien, snap je?.’

Vrees je daar niet voor, om zoals vroeger weer dat etiket ‘drugskot’ op je club geplakt te krijgen?
Pincé: ‘Voor mij bestaat de drugproblematiek in de Cherry Moon niet meer of minder dan elders ter wereld. Ik ga ervan uit dat we weer goed zullen samenwerken met de Lokerse politie. Kijk: ik weet dat we die stempel meedragen sinds 1993. Als er ergens te lande een razzia was, werd er automatisch een foto van Cherry Moon bijgehaald. (haalt schouders op) Op de duur verzet je je daar niet eens meer tegen.’

Wat hebben de huurders in de Cherry Moon-gebouwen eigenlijk fout gedaan toen het de afgelopen twee jaar niet goed lukte?
Pincé: ‘Ik wil me niet als alwetende profileren - ik was dan ook niet in het land - maar misschien zijn die clubs wel wat te veel blijven hangen bij één genre muziek. Met de nieuwe Cherry Moon probeer ik ook op het vlak van service zo goed mogelijk te doen. Ik zal nog steeds zo’n dertig mensen tewerkstellen - waaronder mijn dochter Farah van 21 - maar ik wil een toegankelijker beleid dan vroeger. Acht euro inkom, en geen kledijcode. Ik herinner me hoe ik vroeger zelf uitging en niet binnen mocht in een Antwerpse club omdat ik jeans droeg. Bah. Al moeten ze nu straks ook niet in trainingsbroek afkomen natuurlijk.’

Isola: ‘Maar pakweg een paar piercings: da’s geen probleem toch?’

Tot slot: toen de Gentse Culture Club over de kop ging, was onder andere de postering een (te) grote kost. Kan je ons eens een idee geven wat zoiets kost?
Pincé: ‘Als je er een internationale naam wil uitlichten, mag je rap 4.000 euro rekenen voor genoeg posters aan de muur. Voor één avond, hé. Dat kan je dus niet elke week doen. Op het vlak van marketing is de dancingwereld altijd al een cowboywereld geweest. Budgetten om van te duizelen. Daarom ook: als ik dit zou doen om over twee jaar een bepaalde som verdiend te hebben, doe ik het beter niet. Dit is pure passie.’

Isola: ‘De affiches en de website worden onder andere ontworpen in New York. Cherry Moon zal echt een unieke club worden.’

Pincé: ‘Je ziet: je mag de moed nooit opgeven. (lacht) Dit is passie, maar wel berekend.’
